Gold Spike.
This is literally where the Vegas dream began for me.
Conventionally, a gold spike is a ceremonial spike make of gold, driven to mark the end of a significant railroad project.
For me, this hotel marked the beginning.
The Cliff Notes version is - when I first moved here in 2009 - I stumbled on a listing for Gold Spike while it was undergoing nightly renovations, with rooms listed for $9 a night.
I got my best friend since 5th grade and former bandmate (Babcock) to come to Vegas and stay with me to party.
So for the first month, we lived here on like $300 - in this wonderfully glorious 1970's motel, while I worked for Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas.
Jackhammers blasting at all hours, water pressure that almost peeled your skin off, walked Fremont Street nearly every night, stayed up too late, partied too hard, falling asleep on a bench in McDonald's using a water bottle as a pillow, ate too much pizza, $1 blackjack at Fitzgerald's, and learned so much about myself, and Las Vegas.
After that I got an apartment and went on to live a (semi) normal life, but that time at Gold Spike still holds some of my most formative memories of Las Vegas, even to this day.
Now I'm back 17 years later, and I get to share it all with the love of my life. How cool?
